Roto-Rooter Plumbing & Water Cleanup was formerly called Roto-Rooter Plumbing & Drain Service Roto-Rooter provides plumbing repair, sewer & drain services, and water damage cleanup services to residential and commercial customers. Roto-Rooter is a United States company founded in 1935 which originally specialized in clearing tree roots and other obstructions from sewer lines. As of 2020 it employs thousands of plumbers, and service technicians throughout the U.S. and Canada who provide plumbing and sewer and water damage cleanup services. Roto-Rooter also employs manufacturing technicians and assembly workers at its manufacturing plant in West Des Moines, Iowa. The plant manufactures the company's patented, proprietary Roto-Rooter sewer and drain cleaning machines as well as sewer and drain cleaning cables and blades. Roto-Rooter is a subsidiary of publicly traded Chemed Corporation, which also owns a hospice company, VITAS Healthcare.

"I don't know where to start. As a collections representative we have the hardest job and no one will listen to us. If you are a female, watch out, as the men are favored and will never be at fault for being behind on their work. Sales reps consistently tell customers their job is covered and then the customer has water limits, policy caps, or full denials from no coverage and we are expected to get payment to hit our goal. it takes one account to not hit your goal. We have to deal with angry customers who were told incorrectly and then send them to collections no matter their age or reason. Some Gm's will give discounts for their branches and others won't so negotiating is slim to none when handling accounts to collect from the customer. The company doesn't care about the customers and only want profit. Infact they recently are changing stuff on the Xactimate to make certain items cost more, and this is against IIRC standards , and insurance companies are requesting breakdowns for these new line items and we are denying them that. If insurance doesn't pay we collect any balance leftover from the customer. What a scam! Bonuses: They changed every year where we made less and less to this past year where i will be surprised if anyone hits the new matrix given to the employees.  You have to maintain less than 1% bad debt compared to sales that come in for the year and your money is based on a percentage of what you collect only if you hit. 1% is no errors, or a very low account that you couldn't collect on.  Management: Very micromanaged. They say you can do your own thing but it is constant emails asking about accounts, weekly updates and meetings about why you didn't do this or that, and write-ups if you aren't touching your accounts fast enough, however, you are good if you are a guy and will rarely get in trouble for being behind."

"Pay, work to life ratio, work environment, managers, TERRIBLE! WOMAN PLEASE DO NOT APPLY TO THIS BRANCH!!!!! (Especially If you are a Female whom displays any sense of morality, leadership, and care enough to speak up) You are a Sales Representative making customers sign a document that states no one came to their home to sell anything... but that is literally what you are sent there to do. They will use your ability to find water damage as the loophole (meanwhile your business cards say “Field Supervisor”) SAVE yourself the nightmares/stress and DO NOT APPLY! They lead you in with big promises of income and once you realize how this all really works (& whom you are supposed to report to and how unprofessional and rude they are) you will wonder why it is legal & how they are allowed to manage other human beings. (Chemed owns Roto-Rooter you can google the amount of employee related lawsuits against them for keeping employees money and hour shaving)."

"There is an old saying if it comes too easy beware. That fits with Roto Rooter. I was offered the job 15 min into the first interview. Sales people get a base of $500 a wk. You then get commission but you have to sell over $10,000. . This is almost impossible since 90% of your leads/calls are for very minor damage (Like a leaking dishwasher.) The min. charge is around $1,000 and most people elect to clean up the water themselves. This is especially true if the customer doesn’t have insurance. 60% of the reps. in the company weren’t making over the 10 k min. Three wks in my manager got fired. I latter found out that all of the prior sales rep. were also fired or quit. Then office manager also told me that I needed 500k liability ins. on my car. After reading through the paper work with my agent I found out he was wrong. Had I listened to him I would be paying over $500 a yr. more for nothing. You work 45-50 hrs. A week which includes being on call one day a week. Also, you have to work 1-2 weekends on call a month. (Which could make it 60hrs or more for that week)It all comes out to less that min wage with all the hrs. The general manager is sarcastic. The training is minimal and most of the people there are twenty something’s who still live at home with parents. If you don’t know something the manager blames you for not asking during training. Mileage is good at .58 per mile, but the manager complains if your miles go too high. Then if they are low he complains that you’re not working enough."

"Run. Do Not work here. Pyramid scheme. Management is poor. Techs get screwed on jobs daily- but this doesn't affect management because they get paid from our hard work. The job posting says 100k?! Laughable... I have less money leaving RR than I had working at a factory. They would send people from 1 hr away to get jobs in my area while I was sitting on my bed waiting for calls.... etc You have to provide your own van as a subcontractor, but cannot write it off on taxes because RRs logo is on it! They even screw you in that way. They write YOUR van mileage off.... On and on......RemoteBasically everything. Especially poor pay"

"We called roto rooter out for a plumbing job, snaking a toilet, last Sunday. They let us know that they needed to get someone out who could scope it and would contact us the following day, and that the charge wouldn't be put through on the card until the next person finished the scope. No one called the next day and by 3pm we called to find out what was up and they scheduled an appt for the next day between 9-11. They also went ahead and just put that charge through on our card. Next day rolls around, no call/no show by the plumber. We finally called out of frustration to "cancel" this appointment nobody bothered to show for, and called another company. We also requested a supervisor get back to us and again, nothing. We paid 300 bucks for absolutely nothing."

"Technician came out to diagnose why I had water coming out from my bathroom sink vanity.
He told me it was the trap that needed to be replaced and told me the cost would be $79.00. He then said the problem may be due to the pipes being corroded but then discovered that the drain had been clogged only after I asked him a second time if this was indeed the problem. He then said the job would be $250 so I asked if I could use a $60.00 off coupon on this price and was told I could not since job was really $510 according to him and I was already getting and discount. They try to tell you it is another problem which would be more expensive when the actual problem is less expensive and then disallow you from using their coupon by telling you that you are already being charged at a discounted cost. They should give you the true/actual cost upfront and specify on their coupons what the dollar amount for a job can the coupon be used on or else do not create coupons if the customer can not use them. I would not use them again for my plumbing needs nor would I recommend them to anyone."

"I called roto-rooter to repair a clogged sink. Bart came out and was unable to repair the clog, but did manage to break my garbage disposal trying. I went and purchased a new garbage disposal and Bart returned 2 days later to continue working on the clog and to install the new garbage disposal, but still couldn't repair the clog. He called his manager, Ben, for assistance. Ben arrived, looked around, then told me that I needed to have my basement excavated because the clog was underground. He told me the repair would cost $7,768!!! Of course, I don't have the type of money, so I called another plumber out to get a second opinion. He arrived, tools in hand, snaked the drain for 15 minutes and cleared the clog for a whopping $95!!!!!!!!!! I will NEVER use the services of ROTO-ROOTER again!

Wait...I failed to mention that Bart charged me $73 after his first vist because he poured pipe shield down the clogged drain. OUTRAGEOUS!"

"Did not fix our clogged drain! We spent $390 for a 15 minute service call for a backed up kitchen sink / clogged drain. They snaked the drain but it didn't work, The only solution offered was to go further with snake but there was 50/50 chance it would break the trap. They recommended using chemicals to unclog, We gave the chemicals a shot to no avail. We ended up calling a local plumber in our town who tried to unclog, another $450 out of pocket without a fix. The local plumber recommended that we call a larger company like Roto Rooter or Mr Rooter because they have special equipment that goes further in drain and sprays water. Since Roto Rooter didn't help the first time around, we opted to call Mr Rooter and problem fixed! Shame in Roto Rooter, I think they guys that were dispatched to our house didn't want to be bothered with our drain issue. Terrible service and we will never call Roto Rooter again."

"I was estimated and charged 5600 to dig through our basement cement in two areas and replace pipes. The wonderful young man completed the job himself in under 4 hours. I was charged 1400 dollars an hour. Will never use them again. They morally should be ashamed of their overcharging. I feel I've been fooled and I trusted this company."

"I should have read the reviews before I had this company do my bathroom because like another customer said my price went from 8 something to 500 quick I paid 500 for him to snake my toilet and he left i called right back because my tubs started backing up now this was 2 months ago and today same problem that they saying now when I call to let them no its the same problem oh the work was not guaranteed but my 500 was guaranteed and my bathroom needed to be looked at more so if I was told that I would have nevet gave up 500 I would have used my insurance but it was an emergency and my insurance couldn't get anyone out that night but first and last time I will ever deal with this company"

"It is impossible properly to rate this firm when you can't give negative stars. My house has waste pipes and sewers that need replacement. It insisted on spot payment for camera work, claiming this would be fully reimbursed if I accepted contract to do the work. It very quickly prepared a specification and contract which I agreed. However, as total cost exceeded the maximum amount for repairs permitted under State law, an HIC (home improvement contract) was required. Franchise manager could not or would not prepare a proper HIC for my signature, nor would he provide secure facilities for payment of 10% deposit he was demanding. I sought help from Corporate HQ of Roto-Rooter, but they were not interested. Ultimately franchise manager very rudely "walked away" from the job. Although he promised to refund the camera charge I am still awaiting this. So after a wasted month and $485 out of pocket I am starting over again to get a leaking sewer repaired by another firm. I can only speculate as to whether or not this was a deliberate ploy on the part of Roto-Rooter to get "easy money" at my expense - but it certainly worked."

"I had an underground pipe attached to my downspout that was clogged up The guy was supposed to shoot high pressure water through it to unclog it to see if that would work I said how much would that cost he said $550 I said there's no way I would pay that he said how about $300 I said no this company is a scam they have no set price for anything I figured that he would be there a total of 30 to 45 minutes to see if it worked or not I would have gladly paid him $150 or $200 but when he went from $550 down to $300 in about 10 seconds I said to myself I'm not going to use this guy no matter what he charges I would not recommend Roto-Rooter to anyone seems like a scam of a company"

"This company is truly a complete rip off and I strongly suggest looking elsewhere unless you have no other choice.
We had a broken tap in our garden. Roto rooter came up as a suggested service. I have 3 young kids so we said yes and by the time they arrived here it was 4pm and our water mains were off so we needed the job handled. They gave us a quote of almost $2000 to repair and replace the tap, they had to dig down only 1ft in very soft soil. Just to cap the pipe they charged nearly $600! The next day I did a comparison and we got another company to quote - $240 to cap it and $590 to replace the tap itself.
When I called Roto rooter they were belligerent and offered to refund 10%.
We have on camera their hours on site and the work done so it’s not to debate their time but their absolutely outrageous charges. We feel like someone actually stole from us. If you live in Santa Barbara or Ventura pls don’t use these guys it will be a very expensive exercise for you if you do. They are a complete rip off in every sense"

"On 7/4/2020 Bauer Plumbing aka Syracuse Roto-Rooter was called to my residence to clear a leaky/backed up toilet and help make the residence habitable. The problem ended up being more complicated than the technician expected and was not resolved. The technician stayed for about four hours, attempting to resolve the problem, growing more and more frustrated. He ended up bringing in very heavy equipment (he needed my help moving it up and down the stairs). He damaged the plaster on my walls before ever asking for my help. After he left, I discovered that the technician had left several pairs of soiled, used latex gloves lying about in my home---gloves that had been worn while treating my leaky/backed up toilet. Additionally, the technician neglected to reinstall the bolts to my toilet, leaving it completely unsecured to the bathroom floor. The water main for the toilet was also not turned back on. There was a significant amount of mess left behind on my floors and walls. I reached out to Bauer Plumbing, I mean Roto-Rooter franchise owner, Mark Armstrong, who is unwilling to offer even a partial refund on the $1603.80 that was paid in cash, up front. Mr. Armstrong stated that the $1603.80 paid does not guarantee that the job would be completed. Where is it okay to not complete an expensive plumbing job, damage property, leave behind literal waste materials AND get to keep the entire amount paid up front? Bauer Plumbing aka Syracuse Roto-Rooter!

I'm not disputing that services were attempted, after all the technician was at my residence for 4 hours. I take issue with the entirety of the price that was paid in advance for a job that 1) did not get completed 2) the damages to my property and 3) the dangerous/hazardous conditions the technician left behind (those different pairs of soiled gloves, the lack of proper re-installation of the toilet, etc. I was seeking a partial refund of $400 of the $1603.80 that was paid, upfront (in good faith) but Mark Armstrong is not open to any type of meaningful conversation."

"Absolutely do not hire!!!!!!!! We had some water damage in our home and their water mitigation team was dangerous and incapable of completing the job safely and appropriately. To summarize, they exposed asbestos and did not recognize it in an entire layer of flooring as well as around a pipe. They then quite literally placed a fan on it which blew it all over our entire home unbeknownst to us. At the time, our entire family including our 2 year old and 8 month old were living at the home for a month. They put all of our lives in danger, especially the children. Not only did they not recognize the asbestos in multiple locations of the home, but they removed the containment barrier when they were completed with the work and they never once suggested that we remove ourselves from the home. We hired a new contractor to do the repairs from Emergency Restoration in Troy and immediately upon walking into the home, they recognized the asbestos around an exposed pipe. We then moved out and got the home tested only to find out it was then spread into EVERY SINGLE ROOM of our home. 6 months and 80-90,000 dollars later and we finally got back into our home and roto rooter denies all wrong doing. Not to mention initially they were near impossible to get ahold of when we first recognized their negligence. They are inexperienced and downright dangerous, DO NOT HIRE."

"If you don't want to read a long review about how awful this company is, please take away this key point: DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. Period. My fiancé's and my basement had some kind of water leak late one night which resulted in puddles of water that eventually seeped under parts the laminate flooring. We called Roto-Rooter specifically to remove the water from under the flooring, no other reason. They gave us a quote for $4025-$6775 depending on the work that was actually done. Nowhere on the quote did it say the scope of the work that would be done. This quote is the only document my fiancé signed from this company. So they get to work "extracting water," ripping up our flooring, and setting up their drying equipment that they said would only be left at our house for 3 days. During all this work, my fiancé told one of the techs that insurance would be helping out, and the tech responded by saying "Oh this is about to go WAY up." After 5 days of not hearing from or seeing anybody from the company, we called to ask them to remove their equipment from our house. After the equipment was FINALLY removed, we called to get an exact amount owed so that we could get our finances in order. The guy on the phone told us it would be over $13,000. DOUBLE the high end of the initial quote. When I called to question this, they said that somebody had been by our house everyday to check on the equipment (lie) and that they had our initials on documents stating each time a tech came to check on it (also lie). They also said that the extra cost was for them ripping up our flooring (which they didn't even complete) because they weren't aware at the beginning that water was under the floor (LIE because that was the ONLY reason we called them). Whenever they found out we have cameras around our entire property, they backtracked. They brought over all of the documents from the project, including an itemized invoice for about $10,500, BUT the tech who brought the documents to our house said they would be willing to honor the high end of the original quote ($6775). We thanked him for the documents and got to work going through every last one of them. What we found was 1. On the invoice for $10,500 they were trying to charge us for things that they had never done (things that we have photo and video evidence they had never done), 2. They had documents with 36 different time stamps on different dates that a tech allegedly came to our house to check the equipment and documented various pieces of data regarding the equipment and the job itself (only 7 of those timestamps were accurate, and that was only because they were the times they were setting up equipment - we have video evidence they weren't at our house during any of the other 29 timestamps they have), and most importantly 3. THEY FORGED MY FIANCÉ'S SIGNATURE AND INITIALS ON ALL DOCUMENTS RELATED TO THE JOB, including a direct payment authorization saying our insurance company should pay them directly (didn't happen thank goodness), the work order to start the project, and literally every single document they had for the job besides the original quote. Neither of us had seen any of these documents prior to work being started or at any point during the project UNTIL the tech brought them to our house AFTER they got all of the equipment out. The best part of all is that my fiancé's name starts with an R, but they forged all the signatures and initials starting with a W because they apparently misheard my fiancé's name when he told it to them on the first day. When we confronted them about the forgery, they said "we aren't allowed to do that." Yeah no duh you aren't allowed to do something that is ILLEGAL. That doesn't change the fact that it happened. Please do not ever use Roto-Rooter. You won't regret taking my advice."

"I was told that they won't give estimate on the phone. But when he arrived, he told me without getting out of his Van, it starts from $299 no matter what blockage. Even though mine was only the laundry room drain and with a clean out. For the same service, other company charges only $77. Never use Roto Rooter."

"Beware RIPOFF!! The Roto Rooter tech came to the house within 2 hours for a clogged a bathroom drain so that was timely. His free estimate was $577!!!!! I said no thanks. I YouTubed a couple videos and removed and cleaned the drain an took apart the trap. All clear for FREE. Saved myself $600 and you can too. $577????!!! RIPOFF."

"My parents are old. My Dad is sick. They had a plumbing problem and called these guys. Roto-Rooter was absolutely criminal to them. Multiple reschedules. An ask to come by at Midnight. Did not have the right tools. Did not solve the problem, but still took a lump of my Dad’s disability pay for the clown show they brought to their house. Please do not give them more business."

"The servicean came at 515pm left at 715pm asked me to initial but never told me what I was initializing. After he left I looked over the bill he added 2 additional half hour charges but only stayed 2 hours? I went to run the water and looked under my tub and he had screwed the drain on crooked and was leaking. I had to call another person to fix the issue this is sad because I'm a single woman and had no tools to fix the problem. I tried calling them back but it's the holidays so no answer. This issue has cost me additional monies and lost sleep because the issue has to get fixed as I only have 1 shower. It's sad I spent 450.00 for 2 hours of work it's now 2am on new years day and I'm just now going to bed. Tomorrow my tub has to be taken out and the underneath pipe where the drain attaches replaced charged 3 hours for 2 hours of work and the problem has grown into a disaster. The serviceman had no idea what was the problem when he left and has turned a slow tub draining into a major tub repair after spending 450.00 for 2 hours of ?I tried calling the number but no answer."

"I am a small business owner. This is with out a doubt the worst service I have ever had. We called for clogged drains 2 days before Thanksgiving. After postponing our scheduled service appointments 6, yes 6 times the tech finally showed up on Thanksgiving. Yep 2 days late. We had two clogged drains. As we had a house full of guests for thanksgiving meal I did not double check the techs work. We payed him the huge amount of $400 for unclogging two drains. An hour later I find out he only worked on one drain. So we called right away. It has now been another 2 days and no tech with 4 scheduled appointments being blown off. If you read the reviews online this company is a huge scam."

"Called them for a plumbing appointment. Was told there was no fee for them to come out and inspect the work to be done and that they could do Saturday morning. On the morning they were supposed to arrive I got a call from one of their plumbers asking about what needed to be done. Over the phone he quoted $350 and wanted me to say I would be happy with that before he drove out to see me. Totally unacceptable given I could have got a local firm out on the day and got an honest quote had I not wasted my time with these guys"
